Eric The Axe was the red-hot favourite in race 3 at Gundagai today and he didn’t disappoint, saluting in the Class 1 Maiden Plate (1800m). Having had eight previous runs this campaign the gelding is showing no signs of slowing down as he continues to improve with racing. A confident ride from Jake Duffy made a sure thing of the $2.35 favourite after some nervous moments cornering. “We got into an awkward position rounding the home turn but I knew I was on the winner from a long way out and it was just a matter of being patient and the run would appear,” Duffy said. “He’s still learning his craft and once the penny really drops with him I can see him winning some better quality races over ground.” Eric The Axe was Andrew Dale’s 19th winner for the season, placing the stable among the top echelon of trainers in the region.
