Smokin’ Soldier has claimed his first win for Andrew Dale Racing with victory at Gundagai on Saturday.
The lightly raced five-year-old held off fast finishing race favourite Buff In Disguise to score in the Class 1 & Maiden Handicap (1580m).
It was the second career win for Smokin’ Soldier with jockey Billy Owen taking him to the front early before the pair secured victory by just over a length.
Racing manager Frazer Dale said they had been encouraged by the gelding’s recent runs.
“He finished off nicely over this distance at Narrandera two starts back before running fourth over 1400m at Albury in his last,” he said.
Smokin’ Soldier joined the stable midyear, purchased for $3500 via the Inglis Digital Late June Sale.
