Wodonga, August 5 – Reliable wet-tracker Sheila proved too tough to catch at Wodonga, producing a strong on-speed performance to win by two and a quarter lengths in heavy conditions.
The seven-year-old mare, trained by Andrew Dale at Wangaratta and ridden by Emily Pozman, was simply too strong in the going, maintaining her flawless record on heavy tracks — now 5 wins from 5 attempts.
Yesterday’s win was the eighth of Sheila’s career, taking her total earnings to more than $140,000.
Adding a personal touch to the victory, Sheila is out of Itsmycall, the first winner for Dale in 2015, his debut season as a trainer.
“She loves it wet and she’s just tough,” Dale said after the race. “She travels on speed, gives everything, and Emily handled her really well.”
Pozman kept Sheila handy to the pace before asking her to go at the top of the straight, with the mare kicking strongly to gap her rivals late.
With her proven affinity for rain-affected tracks and a no-nonsense racing style, Sheila continues to be a standout for the Dale stable.
